A high time in Tokyo

28 MAY 2008: A traveller who arrived at Tokyo's Narita airport over the weekend may have picked up an unusual souvenir gift, courtesy of Japanese customs.  In a training session for sniffer dogs on Sunday, a customs official hid a package of cannabis in a suitcase belonging to a passenger arriving from Hong Kong. As it turned out the dogs weren’t quite up to the retrieval and neither was he.

According to a spokeswoman for Tokyo customs, the dogs failed to sniff out the marijuana and the official lost track of both drugs and suitcase during the practice session.

Customs regulations specify that a training suitcase be used for such exercises, but the official said he had used passengers' suitcases for similar purposes in the past.

"The dogs have always been able to find it before," he was quoted as saying. "I became overconfident that it would work."

Anyone who finds the package is asked to contact Tokyo customs as soon as possible!
