09 JUL 2008:  WestJet and Southwest Airlines are teaming up in a codeshare partnership.  The deal will grow Westjet’s trans-border market and will provide Southwest it’s first introduction into international markets. The airlines plan to announce flight schedules and other details by late 2009.

"This is a defining moment for WestJet," said WestJet CEO Sean Durfy. "It marks an important step forward for our guests and their ability to fly to more destinations in the United States conveniently and cost-effectively."

WestJet operates scheduled service to 49 destinations in Canada, the US Mexico and the Caribbean with a fleet of 75 Boeing Next-Generation 737s. Southwest which operates in 48 states also flies 737s.

The airlines aren't yet prepared to announce routes, schedules or fares, Dallas-based Southwest said, and certain details of the agreement are subject to approval by the US and Canadian governments.

Travellers will be able to purchase seats on WestJet flights through Southwest's Web site before the codeshare agreement takes effect.

An integration of frequent-flyer programs is under consideration.
