14 JAN 2010:  It’s a done deal.  Following last September’s announcement, the required regulatory approvals have been received.  The merger of Sunwing Holidays and First Choice Canada is now complete.

Stephen Hunter, the new CEO of the merged company told us he is, “happy that it is finally completed, and we can now continue to strengthen the Sunwing and Signature brands.”

Colin Hunter  chairman of  the new merged companies, must regard the entire situation with some amusement.

In the mid-eighties and nineties, Colin Hunter headed Adventure Tours, a specialist in the then little known model of all-inclusive resorts. Also part of his group of companies, were Fiesta, Fiesta West, and PS Holidays which operated out of Winnipeg.

In 1994 those companies were sold to First Choice in the UK and rebranded in Canada as Signature Vacations.

Now here again is Colin Hunter with Signature – it must seem just slightly ironic.

When the initial announcement regarding the Sunwing-Signature merger was made, Colin Hunter told us that Signature and Sunwing would continue to operate as separate entities - at least for the coming season.  Both companies have contracts with suppliers, said Hunter, “and the contacts will be honoured”.

Stephen Hunter added, "This winter, it’s business as usual.”
