Best airport for entire Americas 22 FEB 2010: Canada held its head high, as the winners of the first regional heat of the Routes Airport Marketing Awards were announced at a gala dinner in Lima. Winners were chosen from three categories: North America, Central America/Caribbean, and South America. And ... drumroll please ... Edmonton International Airport won for best airport in North America and was also named overall winner for the entire Americas region. Carol Hutchins, the airport’s director of Air Service Development, was quoted as saying, “We have implemented a lot of really unique innovative ideas that not only recognized our partners, but also our destinations and our community. I think the combination of those and some good cost-saving ideas for our airline partners has helped in winning the award.”
Aruba’s Queen Beatrix International Airport won in the Central America/Caribbean category and Quito International Airport was tops in South America.
Edmonton will now automatically be shortlisted for the World Awards, to be held at World Routes, in Vancouver in September of this year.
They will compete against winners from the other regional Routes events that are to take place in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the CIS.
Voting for the Routes Americas Airport Marketing Awards started in mid-January and was open for two weeks. Airlines nominated their preferred airports on Routesonline using criteria such as the airport’s market research activities and marketing communications activities.
The shortlisted airports then had to submit a case study to support their nominations to the judging panel.
